Douro

Located in northern Portugal is the first demarcated and regulated wine region in the world. At an altitude of 600 meters, Douro Valley is an area known for its port wine production which is world famous for its quality. The majority of its total area is mainly covered with vineyards and the vines are terraced or simply planted in ridges carved out into the rocky soil, having an average of 65 years old, but many of them are over 100 years old.

A plethora of different grape varieties is to be found in the Douro region. Some vineyards still have the traditional mix of varieties as they believe their grape variety mix is the key to producing top quality wines. The most common red grapes include Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão, Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional. The famous white grapes include Arinto, Gouveio, Malvasia Fina, Moscatel Galego Branco, Rabigato and Viosinho.
